Recipe: Homemade Hot Cocoa

Recipe: Homemade Hot Cocoa

We recently had our first snowfall of the season here! I’m not a huge fan of the snow but as I’ve mentioned in a previous post, I’m trying to take a new approach to my feelings about the seasons. Here in New England, we experience all four seasons, but winter definitely tends to feel the longest. However, one of the upsides of winter is that it gives us the perfect excuse to stay home and indulge in all the cozy things! I see a lot of Hygge infused nights in the next few months.

So what could be better paired with a cold snowy day than some delicious homemade hot cocoa? Nothing!

This recipe takes all of about 5 minutes to make, but it is absolutely delicious! I’m all for Swiss Miss when I have it but there is something extra special about making hot cocoa from scratch. It’s also super simple. You might even have everything you need already in your pantry and fridge 🙂

Serves: 4

You will need:

4 cups of milk (you can use a non-dairy option too if you’d like)
1/3 cup hot water
1/4 cup Unsweetened Cocoa Powder
1/3 cup granulated sugar
pinch of salt

Optional Toppings:
Whipped cream (if you want to go the extra mile and make your own whipped cream this is a great recipe!)
Marshmallows
Cinnamon

Instructions:

  1. In a medium sauce pan add the hot water, cocoa powder, sugar, and salt and stir constantly over medium heat.
  2. Stir until the mixture has a smooth consistency.
  3. Reduce heat, then pour your milk or milk subsitute into the sauce pan and stir until the milk and cocoa/sugar mixture is well combined.
Be sure not to let the milk boil!
  4. Once the hot cocoa is warm, turn off the heat and pour into mugs.

Serve immediately either on its own or with a topping! I personally love my hot cocoa with whipped cream and sprinkle of cinnamon 😛

Sending love, light, and holiday cheer,

sig
